Byelections Results Split

The governing Liberals managed to hold on to Ottawa West-Nepean in a tight byelection race, while the Tories easily won the eastern Ontario riding of Leeds Grenville. Former Mayor of Brockville Steve Clark easily won the byelection to replace former Conservative MPP Bob Runciman. The P-C candidate received 67 per cent of the vote. Liberal candidate Stephen Mazurek had 20 per cent of the vote.The Greens Neil Kudrinko received almost 8% , the NDP's Steve Armstrong 5% and Liberation Anthony Giles .5% .  Runciman held the seat for 29 years before resigning his seat to become a Conservative Senator. Liberal Bob Chiarelli, a former mayor of Ottawa, squeaked past Conservative rival Beth Graham with 43% of the popular vote to her 39% in Ottawa West-Nepean 

Police Search 416 Near Kemptville

There was a heavy police presents along the 416 near Kemptville yesterday. Ottawa Police searched a wooded area at the side of southbound Highway 416 near the Kemptville exit for several hours. The Ottawa Citizen reports police received a tip that a gun connected to the February 22nd murder of 19 year old Mike Swan may have been tossed out of a car on the highway. Three Toronto-area men have been charged with first-degree murder.

Area Watersheds

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority is predicting "below average spring flow conditions" along the Rideau Valley watershed this spring  The authority says the spring runoff forecast is based on the present snow conditions in the watershed, weather forecasts of continuing above freezing daily temperatures and the "assumption" there will be normal precipitation amounts over the next several weeks. The South Nation Conservation reports current water level in the watershed are relatively normal for this time of year. The warmer weather may cause ice break-up causing nuisance flooding due to ice jams.  Residents are being urged to be cautious around watercourses this time of year. The authority says the continuing warm temperatures have caused gradual increases in water levels in area ditches and streams and parents should advise their children of these hazards.

Body of Missing Pakenham Woman Found.

Police say the body of a missing Pakenham woman has been found. Provincial police discovered the body of 51-year-old Tina Smithson Wednesday in a fast-flowing creek near her home. She had left her home on foot on Jan. 26, and provincial police had conducted an extensive search of the area surrounding her house. Police believe she fell through the ice of the creek. An autopsy will be held at the Ottawa Hospital. 

Man Rescued From a North Gower Corn Silo

Some tense hours in North Gower yesterday after a man was buried up to his neck in corn. It took rescuers just over six hour to pull him from the corn silo. Rescuers gave the man an air mask to help him breathe while a hole was cut in the silo so the corn could be vacuumed out from around him. Ottawa fire sector Chief Paul Hutt says he didn't think the man suffered any serious injuries.

Train Derails Near Morrisburg.

There were no dangerous goods and no one was injured when a freight train derailed near Morrisburg on Tuesday afternoon around 2:30. 10 cars on the derailed train were carrying ingots used in smelters. The rest of the cars were empty. Via says passenger service is being affected along the Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal corridor. Passengers are warned to expect delays between two and three hours. Passengers with questions are asked to contact Via Rail at 1-888-VIA-RAIL. 

Copperheads Skate into Kingston

Ten members of the Smiths Falls Police force will be among 1,500 police officers descending on Kingston today. The officers are members of the Smiths Falls Police "Copperheads" Hockey Team. Kingston is hosting the 2010 International Police Hockey Tournament. In all, 98 teams from Ontario, Quebec and the U-S will compete over two days. The Copperheads play at 10am and 3pm today and plan to be in the thick of it again on Thursday.
