Tragedy at Carp Arena

A 15-year-old boy is dead after collapsing during a hockey game in Carp, just west of Ottawa.  It happened last night, February 5, at the Erskine Johnson Arena.  Ottawa police say the boy collapsed on the bench after coming off the ice. He was given C-P-R, then rushed to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Police say the teen wasn't hurt during the game and they do not suspect foul play. The boy's name hasn't been released. 

Smiths Falls Police Service Turns 125

Plans to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Smiths Falls Police Service are under way. The first event plan to celebrate the force, which was launched on Feb. 9, 1887, is Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Community Centre (new arena). Beginning at 3pm there will be a brief celebration with Mayor Dennis Staples, other dignitaries and the public is invited to come out to acknowledge the many decades of service provided by the Smiths Falls Police Service. By the end of March the Police Service will be creating a new display for the front lobby of the Town Hall complete with artifacts, photographs and other mementoes. One police officer is researching the force's history and is expected to publish a book on police history before the year is out. 

Smiths Falls Council Asked to Help Save Cinema

The group trying to keep the Smiths Falls Premier Cinema open has sent a letter to Smiths Falls Council asking for its support. In the letter Louis Tremblay the Chair of the Smiths Falls & District Arts & Culture Council (SFDACC) and  a Director on the Downtown business Association (DBA) states The Smiths Falls Movie Theatre is one of the very few in Canada that still stand which architecturally represent the post Second World War era. Adding the town's cinema is in an excellent location, and in a revitalized downtown core, it has great potential to be a distinguished attraction that celebrates our heritage respecting both the past generations of business leaders who built up this town and especially by recognizing the excellent leadership that the present proprietors, Rivington and Associates have demonstrated in the preservation and enhancement of their downtown core block. The 63 year old cinema was closed to the public Thursday, February 2nd 

Drug Bust in Brockville Nets One Suspect

On the 2nd of February at approximately 2 pm members of the Joint Force Drug Unit - Project Islander - executed a search warrant at an apartment on Salisbury Drive in Brockville.  The search warrant was in relation to an investigation under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.  A 22 year old male from the location was arrested and charges are pending.  A significant quantity of marijuana was seized along with suspected stolen property.   The investigation continues and the adult male is currently in police custody. 

Brockville Male Facing Robbery/Assault Charges

At 27 year old Brockville man is facing charges in connection with a reported robbery and assault. At approximately 9 pm Tuesday,January 31 a 59 year old Brockville man reported that he had been assaulted and robbed.  The victim suffered facial injuries in the assault was taken to BGH were he was treated and released. Around 12:30am Feb 1st. Police located the suspect on King Street West.  The accused Craig Cassibo of Brockville was charged with Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Robbery, 3 counts of Breach of Undertaking and Breach of Probation. 

Brockville Police Target Red Light Runners

The Brockville Police will be focusing on Red Light Runners throughout February. Last month the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program or STEP went after Distracted Driving. Officers will be increasing enforcement and education related to the offence of Disobey Red Light.  Officers will continue to enforce all rules of the road during this time as well. 

Pembroke Crash Victims ID'd

The two people killed in a crash that closed highway 17 for 11 hours this week have been identified. 79 year old Alan Smith of Deep River and his 74 year old passenger Marinea Smith were killed when the car they were in went out of control on the snow covered highway Tuesday and crossed into the oncoming lane hitting a pickup truck. The two people in that vehicle were slightly injured. 

Smiths Falls Premier Cinema Closes Tonight.

What may be the last movie to be screened at the Premier Cinema in Smiths Falls will run February 2nd. The current owners have decided to close the theatre after this evenings screening. Businessman John Rivington and associate Ian Miller, announced plans to purchase of the theatre last November. They plan to demolish the building to make room for a parking lot. Due to issues related to title on the property, conclusion of the sale could take up to two more months. The company could lease the build out, but only if an interested party can be found that have a sound business plan and the money needed to upgrade the theatre and ensure it’s financially viable. A local group is compiling cost estimates to renovate the theatre. 

Perth Fire Leaves 3 homeless

Three people have been left homeless after a fire raced through he Perth home yesterday. Fire crews responded to the fire on Clyde Street around 3:30pm Wednesday February 1st. and had in knocked down by 5:30pm. The cause is still under investigation. No injuries were reported, damage is reported to be around $150,000. A neighbouring home also suffered heat damage. 

Car Crash Cuts Power to Thousands Wednesday

Hydro One dealt with a major power outage in the area caused by a car crash Wednesday February 1st.  A 38 year old female from Portland was traveling southbound on Highway 15 near Lombardy yesterday afternoon. The vehicle crossed over the northbound lane, over a snow bank and hit a hydro pole. The woman was not injured but is facing a charge of careless driving. The outage affected around seven thousand people in the area between Beckwith to the north, Portland to the south, Smiths Falls to the west and Tay Valley to the east.

Fatal Crash Near Pembroke

Highway 17 re-opened just after 2 this morning, February 1. The highway near Pembroke was closed for 13 hours after a collision at about 3 Tuesday afternoon killed two people.  A car heading west crashed head-on with a pickup truck. Two adults in the car were killed two people in the truck were treated at the scene for minor injuries.  A third vehicle was involved, but police describe that as indirect. 

Arrests Made in Brockville Scrap Theft

Two Brockville men have been arrested after reportedly trying to steal scrap metal from a Central Avenue location.  The two suspects were caught in the act around 9 yesterday morning - they'll be in court next month. The incident occurred on the 30th of January 2012 at 9 am. The males were caught in the act of removing the property and police were called. Both males were released with a future court date and conditions. 

Gangs Swarm Stores

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), East Region, warning merchants of groups attending businesses that are either checking it out for future thefts or stealing items that can be carried out. Groups of 3-10 people, men and women, traveling in vans or other larger cars are enter a business wearing large baggy clothing.  One or more will distract the clerk/cashier, while the others lift goods and go into offices. They will avoid the front of the store/cash as they leave with articles hidden by their clothing.  Some may be struggling to walk as they leave. If anyone has information about these types of thefts, they are asked to call their local police immediately or the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

UCDSB/CDSB BUSES CANCELLED FEB 1

All School buses with the Upper Canada District School Board, Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario have been cancelled for today, Schools remain open .

Smiths Falls Campus of Willis College is closed today because of the weather.

ATM Stolen From Beckwith Recreation Complex

Lanark County OPP are investigating a Break and Enter and Theft from the Beckwith Recreation Complex last week. Police say sometime overnight on Thursday, January 26th and Friday 27th. thieves stole an Automated Teller Machine and contents from the building. The damage to the building and cash contents have yet to be determined and the ATM is valued at approximately $3000.
