Property Rights Discussion in Perth Tonight

A public forum on Property Rights well take place this evening in Perth. MPP  Randy Hillier, MP Scott Reid, and Dr. Mark Milke of the Fraser Institute will discuss, and answer questions on property rights, at the from 7pm to 9pm May 17 at the Perth Civitan Hall . Dr. Milke's new book: Stealth Confiscation: How governments regulate, freeze, and devalue private property-without compensation will be launch at the gathering.

Man Rescued From Ottawa River

One man is being treated for hypothermia after spending about 25 minutes in the frigid Ottawa River, west of the Brittania Yacht Club, the evening of Wednesday May 16 . The victim was tossed from a 16 foot sailboat which was slammed by a large wave whipped up by high winds. Those gusts kept the boat's operator from getting to the man, although he was able to circle the man until fire rescue arrived.  Paramedics rushed the man to hospital.

Algonquin College Names New President

A new president for Algonquin College.  Dr. Kent MacDonald takes on the role left by Robert C. Gillett who served as president for 17 years.  Now Algonquin's 7th president, MacDonald has more than a decade of experience at the college.

Special Olympics Torch Run May 17

The 25th anniversary Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run, the largest source of funds for Special Olympics Ontario, will see Opp officers along with local Special Olympians and various law enforcement agencies hitting the street again today. At 9:30 this morning the Torch Run will leave the Perth Police offices and head through town to the OPP detachment on hwy 7. At 11:30 officers will run from the Carleton Place OPP detachment to town hall. Then in Merrickville at 1:30 this afternoon Opp will run from the Merrickville Public School through the downtown. Runners will have their collection buckets ready for those who wish to make a donation.

Search for Missing Smiths Falls Man Continues

The search continues for 58-year-old Morris Ladouceur of Smiths Falls, missing since last Thursday, May 10. He was last seen at his home on highway 15 in Montague Township.  He's described as five foot eight, 160 lbs, with brown eyes and greyish-brown hair, and he was last seen wearing a brown Hawaiian shirt, blue jeans, brown shoes and a black jacket.  The OPP is also asking for the public to watch for Mr.  Ladouceur along the 401 corridor from the Cornwall area and west towards the Belleville/Cobourg region.  Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Morris Ladouceur is urged to contact the Lanark County OPP at 613-267-2626 or 1-888-310-1122.

417 Crash

A 32 year old woman is shaken up and suffering from bumps and bruises after her S.U.V  rolled several times Tuesday May 15 on the Queensway. The victim was on the Metcalfe eastbound on-ramp last night when a dark pick up, allegedly forced her to lose control and crash into the cement median. The suspect vehicle never stopped.  It's descried as a dark pick up.  Any witnesses are asked to contact OPP

Police Week Perth

Police Week 2012 will be marked in Perth with an Open House on Wednesday May 16, at the Perth Police Station 1881 Rogers Road from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. You’re invited to come in and have a tour of the police station.

Computer Scam Reported in Brockville

Brockville Police are warning area residents about a computer scam claiming to involve the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). Police recently received a complaint from a Brockville resident about the scam, which claims to require money to unlock the user's computer screen. The scam operates through a computer virus, which causes a screen to appear when the computer is turned on. The message uses a CSIS heading and informs the user the computer's operating system has been locked because the IP address was used to visit websites that include child pornography and adds that spam messages with terrorist motives were sent from the user's computer. It adds the computer cannot be used until a $100 fine is paid according to instructions on the screen.

Westport Fatal Crash

A 37-year-old woman was killed in a crash near the Westport Monday evening. OPP report around 7pm May 15 officers were responding to a different call when they were informed of a single-car collision on Bedford Street, on the outskirts of Westport. Upon arrival, the officers found a red Pontiac in the ditch and the lone female occupant, who had been ejected from the vehicle. The female driver, 37 year old, Moira Kelly, of Westport, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Perth Train Collision Victim ID

Provincial Police have identified the 20-year-old Perth man killed Monday May 14 while walking on railway tracks. Delsyn Stott died Monday evening when he was struck by a westbound freight train just west of Perth in Tay Valley Township around 6pm. The train was traveling from Smiths Falls to Toronto. Lanark County OPP continue their investigation into the cause of the collision. They ask anyone with information on the collision to call them at 613-267-2626 or 1-888-310-1122.

Fatal 401 Truck Crash Near Belleville

Traffic continues to be affected following a fatal and fiery crash on Highway 401 in Quinte region, east of Belleville.   Two-tractor trailers collided Tuesday, May 15, afternoon (east of Shannonville Road) when an eastbound big rig crossed the median and hit a westbound transport.  Police say both trucks were immediately engulfed in flames, killing both drivers. Westbound lanes of the 401 at the crash site will remain closed until about midday (between Marysville and Shannonville Roads).  One eastbound lane is also closed (between Highway 37 in Belleville and Deseronto Road). The drivers' names have not yet been released.

Hershey Plant in Smiths Falls SOLD!

The Town of Smiths Falls announced yesterday, Monday May14, that the former Hershey Chocolate Plant in Smiths Falls has been sold to ICON International, a subsidiary of Omnicom Group Inc. ICON International, Inc. is a specialized finance company engaged in corporate barter helping companies restore value to underperforming assets and fund corporate expenses. Corporate barter restores value by exchanging assets for media placements or other business purchases over a span of time. Mayor Dennis Staples. "We are entering a transition phase in our history and through innovative corporate solutions like these we will be better positioned to attract investment into the community and the jobs that follow," The Hershey Company facility in Smiths Falls closed in 2008 after forty-six years of operation. The closing resulted in the lay-off of over 400 permanent jobs in the community.
"This is great news for the Town of Smiths Falls and it adds further credence to the confirmation from the corporate community about the positive sense of confidence that industry has in Smiths Falls as we move forward," says Mayor Dennis Staples. "We are entering a transition phase in our history and through innovative corporate solutions like these we will be better positioned to attract investment into the community and the jobs that follow," said the Mayor.
"The acquisition of the Hershey Plant by ICON International opens the door to even more creative opportunities for attracting new industry to the community," said Bob Cheetham, the Town's Director of Economic Development. "The ICON solution provides a greater degree of flexibility and I look forward to working with ICON as we collectively pursue new investment opportunities," he said.
"ICON looks forward to working with the Town of Smiths Falls to find a sustainable solution for use of the Hershey facility," says James Tully, Vice-President of Real Estate for ICON International. "Our objectives are in line with those of the Town and that is to secure a solid purchaser for the plant at our earliest opportunity," he said.

Fire Hits Ottawa Bed and Breakfast

One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries after a fire at a bed and breakfast in Ottawa.  Ottawa fire received a call about a fire in a multi-unit complex, at Kent and Arlington, just before 7pm Monday, May 14.  Firefighters rescued an unspecified number of people off of balconies and 10 people were displaced by the blaze. A 47-year-old man rescued from the building was treated for minor smoke inhalation and transported to hospital.

Police Search for Missing Smiths Falls Man

O.P.P need the public's help in locating a missing smiths falls man.  58-year-old Morris Ladouceur was last seen Thursday at his home on highway 15 north of Smiths Falls in Montague Township.  He's described as five foot eight, 160 lbs, with brown eyes and greyish-brown hair. He was last seen wearing a brown Hawaiian shirt blue jeans, brown shoes and a black jacket.  Ladouceur is known to hitch hike and carry a bible. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Morris Ladouceur is urged to immediately contact the Lanark County OPP at 613-267-2626 or 1-888-310-1122.

Man Killed by Train Near Perth

A young man from Lanark County has been killed as he was walking on train tracks. The 20 year old was struck and killed by a freight train, west of Perth, around 6 Monday night.  The train was forced to remain on the tracks for several hours after the accident, before being allowed to continue on to Toronto. It's not known why the man was on the tracks. The name of the man isn't being released until next of kin are notified.
